George W. Bishop
Hornell-George W. Bishop, 73, of North Main Street Ext., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning (June 24, 2017) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Born in North Hornell on June 17, 1944, he was a son of the late William and Roberta (Goff) Bishop.
A lifelong resident of North Main Street Ext. in the town of Hornellsville, George was employed at the former Bardeen Farm on the Big Creek Road when he was a teenager. In 1966, he began working at Stern & Stern Textiles in Hornell and retired in 2003 after 37 years of employment.
Throughout the years he was an active member of the former I.O.O.F and the Hornell Moose Lodge No. 210. He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed fishing, bowling, hunting and spending time at the Clancy family cabin. George was an avid fan of the N.Y. Yankees, the Buffalo Bills, the Hornell Dodgers, the Hornell Red Raiders and was the #1 fan at his nieces and nephews sporting events. Some of his other favorite pastimes included traveling to Casinos, playing euchre with his Sunday card club and playing and volunteering to work at Bingo games. He would often be seen visiting the Hornell Fire Dept. and working at their annual carnival.
George was very fortunate to have many caring friends especially, Kim O’Rourke, Mike and the “girls” at the Arkport Village Café where he enjoyed eating breakfast every morning; also, his Sunday card club and his fellow Hornell Dodger fans.
His loving family includes his sister, Barbara (Richard) Clancy; his brother, Daniel (Mindy) Bishop all of Hornell; his four nieces and nephews, Bridgit (Christopher) Buono, Richard W. (Patricia) Clancy, James (Brenda) Clancy all of Hornell and William J. (Erin) Bishop of Tampa, Fla.; his five great-nieces and nephews, Shawn Buono, Patrick Clancy, Jaden Roberta Buono, Taylor Clancy and Carson Clancy all of Hornell; his “special sister”, Marlene White of Harrisburg, Pa. and her children, Karen White, Thom White (Leigh Lauer), Laura (Larry) Heim and Donald (Jen) White; as well as their children.
The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of George W. Bishop.
Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Tuesday (June 27, 2017) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where the Hornell Moose Lodge will conduct a memorial service at 6:45 p.m.Tuesday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (June 28, 2017), at the funeral home, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. 2. Barb(Richard)Clancy, Dan(Mindy)Bishop and extended families. My Deepest Sympathies to each of you. In my early years, George was a vital part of our family, especially my dad. So many special memories that George has left us with, many treasures. Determination best describes George for this writer. Determined to get a drivers license, determined to obtain better employment, held it for 30+ years, determined to be friends with everyone, a true success. Hornell has lost an icon, but he’ll never be forgotten, and Hornell will never be the same. May each of your memories bring smiles. Eternal Father, be with this wonderful family, they all have been through so much sorrow. Bring peace to them, now and forever….RIP George!!! Give a hug to Dad and Dick!
