DOMINIC C. “MIKE” CIPOLLA

HORNELL-Dominic C. “Mike” Cipolla, 91, passed away Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7, 2017) at his home on Washington St., after a long illness.
Born in Mt. Morris on March 22, 1925, he was a son of the late Philip and Phyllis (Gullo) Cipolla. On Jan. 27, 1951 he was married at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell to the former Elizabeth “Betty” Griswold, who predeceased him on Jan. 5, 1990 after 39 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his infant son, Dominic C. Cipolla, Jr. and his son, Michael Cipolla (2006); his brothers and sisters, Charles Cipolla, Rosie Coletta, Gertrude Chiavaroli, Martha Scheckler, Josephine Rice, Sam Cipolla, Lucy Horner, Angie Hamler, Frances Karnes and Mary Dibbley.
A graduate of Mt. Morris Central School, Mike also received his associate’s degree from Elmira College. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to his honorable discharge in1945 and was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern (E-A-M) Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
After his military service Mike became a resident of Hornell where he began to learn the trade of carpentry. Eventually he was employed as a carpenter and cabinet maker in Rochester before he began his 22 year career as a building trades instructor with Steuben-Allegany BOCES in Hornell, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell.
Mike dearly loved his family and enjoyed spending time doing woodworking. He will be remembered for being a very talented carpenter who enjoyed helping others with their carpentry needs. He was especially proud of the fact that he passed his talent onto his grandson, Andrew “Andy” Turner.
His loving family includes his four daughters, Christine (David) Jarvie of Rochester, MaryKay Cipolla of Hornell, Elizabeth “Beth” Turner of Canisteo and Susanne (Daniel) Neyland of Rochester; his son, David Denhoff of Whitesville; his daughter-in-law, Diane Polsky of New Jersey; his eight grandchildren, Matthew Jarvie, Jennifer and Joshua Cipolla, Michael Howard, Ryan (Chelsea) Turner, Andrew “Andy” (Letitia) Turner, Nicole Turner and Katherine Neyland; his one great-grandaughter, Lillyanna Turner and another great-grandchild expected soon; his two sisters, Theresa Fraser of Mt. Morris and Laura Rimore of Georgia; also several nieces and nephews.
The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Dominic C. “Mike” Cipolla.
Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell or to St. Ann’s Academy, P.O. Box 446, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
The United States flag and the Army flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of Mike’s military service during World War II.
