THEODORE H. “TED” WIGHTMAN

AVOCA-Theodore H. “Ted” Wightman, 87, of Carrington St., passed away late Sunday evening (Jan. 24, 2016) at the Taylor Health Center in Bath, after a short illness.
Born in the Town of Cohocton on March 1, 1928, he was a son of the late Henry and Orpha (Cragg) Wightman. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his daughter, Denise Mitchell, his grandson, Chad; his brother, Arthur Wightman and his sister, Margelia Ostrander.
From 1950 to his honorable discharge in 1952 as a Sergeant, Ted proudly served his country with the U.S. Army.
He was formerly employed by the Taylor Wine Company in Hammondsport before he began his 26 year career with Bath V.A. Medical Center, retiring in 1990.
Ted was a member of the Bath V.F.W. Post and a 61 year member of the Avoca American Legion.
A sports enthusiast, he was a big Yankees fan and also was an avid camper and enjoyed bowling.
His loving family includes his wife of 63 years, the former Marie Merrill, who he married in Avoca on May 25, 1952; his four sons, Dana (Leann) Wightman of Avoca, Daryl (Karen) Wightman of Georgia, Dean (Kelly) Wightman of Prattsburgh and Christopher (Danielle) Wightman of Avoca; his eight grandchildren, Brianna, Kayla, Patrick, Abbey, Lukas and Carter Wightman, Rob and Jill Alsheimer; his five great-grandchildren; his sister, Doris Calkins; his sister-in-law, Judy Wightman; also many nieces and nephews.
The Avoca Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Theodore H. “Ted” Wightman.
Calling hours are 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday at the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca, where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at 2 p.m. Thursday. Committal services and interment, with military honors, will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.

  1. I wish to express my condolences to the Wightman family for their loss. I will remember Ted as a humorous, kind and gentle man from my encounters with him and Marie at the Legion and VFW. May he rest in peace.
