HESTER L. SHEPARD

ARKPORT-Hester L. Shepard, 99, of Northridge in Arkport, passed away Saturday November 22, 2014 at her home surrounded by family, friends and her dog Hanna.

Born in the Town of Dansville on January 10, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Milo and Nina Fisher Lawrence. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her husbands, Howard V. White and Morris W. Shepard, Jr.; her brother Everett “Bus” Lawrence; her sister Dorothy Whitman and her son-in-law, John McCarthy.
A lifelong resident of the Hornell-Arkport area, Hester was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1933.
For many years, she owned and operated the former White Insurance Agency in Hornell. Later with her second husband, Morris Shepard, owned and operated The Sirloin Room in Elmira.
Hester was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell and a long time summer resident at her cottage on Loon Lake.
Her loving Family includes her two daughters, Sue White of Arkport and Sally McCarthy of Joppa, MD.; her son Thomas (Wanda) White of Hornell; her seven grandchildren, Shawn (Lisa) McCarthy of Newport News, VA., John “JJ” McCarthy of Leesburg, VA., Brett (Danielle) White of Hornell, Brian McCarthy of Joppa, MD., Taryn (James) Manuele of Saratoga Springs, NY, Jay (Sharon) Krisher of White Marsh, MD. and Michelle Boarder of Hornell; her 12 great-grandchildren, Mariah McCormick, Connor, Bailey and Addison McCarthy, Jackson, Ava and Ella White, Gianna and Claudia Manuele, Alexis Boarder and Sam and Alex Krisher; her two brothers, Lewis (Carolyn) Lawrence and Dane Lawrence; her sister, Jill White; also her nieces and nephews.
The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Hester L. Shepard.
A very special thank you to Rose Seaman, a devoted friend to Hester, her dedicated caregivers and to Dr. Pasquale Picco for his committed compassion and care of Hester.
Calling hours are from 2-6 p.m. on Tuesday November 25, 2014 at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with the Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Committal services and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the Hornell YMCA, 18 Center St., Hornell or to the Hornell High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 135, Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.

  1. I had the pleasure of spending time with Hester she was one wonderful and amazing woman we sat and she told me stories of the beautiful horses she owned and all the happy moments in her life. Heaven has a beautiful Angel she will be missed.

  2. Hester was a wonderful woman she will be greatly missed by all that knew and lover her. We have such good memories of her here at loon lake. Her support and encouragement will never be forgotten.
