NANCY H. HANN

HORNELL-Nancy H. Hann, passed away suddenly early Tuesday morning (Oct. 22, 2013) at her home on Catherine St., after a short illness.
Born in North Hornell on June 27, 1937, she was the daughter of the late James M. Hover, Jr. and Lorraine Hayes Hover. She has lovingly shared the last 60 years of her life with her high school and college sweetheart, John L. Hann, who she married 54 years ago.
A resident of Hornell most of her life, Nancy was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1955. She also attended SUNY Albany where she majored in Latin and minored in French and in 1958 she received an associate’s degree from SUNY Alfred in secretarial sciences.
She and John resided in Rochester for a short period of time where she was employed as an administrative assistant at Kodak Park before returning to Hornell in 1963.
Nancy will be remembered for being a very talented organist and pianist. She shared her extensive musical background by providing private organ and piano lessons to hundreds of students in home for nearly 50 years.
For over 25 years she served as the organist and co-directed the choir at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell. She was instrumental, along with the late Linda Stohlberg, in creating the children’s choir. Nancy also served part time as an organist at St. Ann’s Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell. Over the years she has enriched hundreds of wedding and funeral services for area families by providing the organ music for the ceremonies. Nancy also served as a substitute accompanist for the Hornell Immediate School musical programs.
Nancy was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell and enjoyed spending time reading, knitting and doing Sudoku puzzles. She also generously volunteered her time at Hornell Gardens by providing the music accompaniment for Masses held there.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother, James Hover, III
Her loving family includes her husband, John; her two daughters, Kimberley (James) Murray of Syracuse and Terri (Daniel) Koehler of Hornell; her son, David (Rose) Hann of Los Angeles, Calif.; her 10 grandchildren, Jennifer (Adam) Klinges of Mountain Top, Pa., Timothy (Carrie) Koehler of Painted Post, Joseph Koehler of Hammondsport, Michelle Hann of San Diego, Calif., Andrew Koehler of Hornell, James Murray of Bordeaux, France, Alexander Hann of Los Angeles, Calif., Laura Koehler and Stacey Koehler both of Hornell and Isaac Hann of Los Angeles, Calif.; he great-granddaughter, Emma Koehler of Painted Post; her sister-in-law, Peg Hover; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the American Diabetes Assoc., 160 Allens Creek Rd., Rochester, N.Y. 14618 or to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Rd., Hornell, N.Y. 14843. 1. thought and prayers going your way..remember her forever a good friend she loved my girls and we all loved her will miss her smile and most of all her music…the most influencial music teacher ever…cannot believe she is gone but at home in heaven…her memory will stay in my heart and the heart of our family always…

  2. I loved Nancy. She was the organist when I sang in the choir at St. Ignatius and was not only a super musician, but also was patient with all of our silliness. She joined us in many laughing “fits” and just was delightful.
A special memory for me was when she and my daughter, Rebecca Diette, played a organ-piano duet while we sang to their lovely playing. She will remain always in my heart until I see her again.

  3. THOUGH I HAVEN’T SEEN NANCY IN MAANY YEARS, SOME OF MY FONDEST MEMORIES WHILE GROWING UP ARE SITTING ON HER BACK PORCH PLAYING CANASTA OR ROOK, OR LISTENING TO HER PLAY THE PIANO. JON, MY PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AT THIS SPECIAL TIME. GOD BLESS AND HOLD YOU CLOSE.
