RITA R. PHILIPPS

CANASERAGA/HORNELL-Rita R. Philipps, 91, formerly of Canaseraga and Hornell, passed away early Monday morning (July 15, 2013) at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath, after a long illness.
Born in Canaseraga on Nov. 6, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Ida Wode Philipps. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her three brothers, Carl “Mike” Philipps, Francis Philipps and James Philipps and her three sisters, Marie Hammersmith, Viola Fawcett Lyttle and Evelyn Beckwith.
A resident of Canaseraga for most of her life, Rita was a graduate of Canaseraga Central School. She resided in Hornell prior to becoming resident of the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath.
For 37 years she was employed at Gunlocke’s in Wayland, retiring as an ulphosterer.
Rita was formerly a member of St. Mary’s Church in Canaseraga and most recently she was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell.
An avid bingo player, she also enjoyed bowling and fishing.
Her family includes several nieces and nephews.
To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell, NY 14843 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Her family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath for their compassionate care.
Arrangements are with the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell.

  1. aunt rita had so much love in her heart for the people that truly loved her, she took care of her mother her whole life, and her fiance and her brother in law. she gave so much of herself to others.i will miss her and think about her every day, and ill miss her fantastic cooking. RIP Auntie
