Carl Linden Wellington, Jr.
Carl L. Wellington, 83, of Hornell, NY passed away Sunday (July 8, 2012) at home. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of 62 years, Beverly Bridge Wellington, , and his children Donald (Christiana) of Ocala, FL and Diane (Bruce) Clough of Las Vegas, NV, one brother, Charles Wellington of Oak Hill, Arkport, five grandchildren, Laurel, Sandra, and Julia Wellington and Andrew and Rachel Clough, and three great-grandchildren, Audrey, David Ryan, and Alex.
Carl was born April 4, 1929 in North Hornell, the son of the late Carl Wellington, Sr. and Ruth Kinney Wellington. He was a graduate of Hornell High School Class of 1946, and attended the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean conflict. In 1952, he established C.L. Wellington, Inc, a petroleum distributing company, and was chosen to serve on Mobil Oil Corporation’s National Distributor Advisory Council. Carl also became a member of the New York State Oil Producers Association. After 35 years of successful operations, Carl sold the business and retired in 1987.
In his youth, Carl enjoyed membership in the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 16, in Arkport, earning the rank of eagle scout. As an adult, he returned to become Scoutmaster of his former troop. He later became an honorary board member and past president of the Steuben Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, earning scouting’s prestigious “Silver Beaver” award.
Carl previously served as alderman on the Hornell City Council and was past president and director of the Hornell Area Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a past president of the Hornell Country Club, as well as past president and director of Bethesda Community Hospital and director of Bethesda Hospital Foundation.
As Chairman of the Board of Maple City Savings and Loan Association, he was recipient of “the community service award for distinguished and outstanding contributions to the public welfare” by the Pillars of Thrift Honor Society of the New York League of Savings Institutions.
Affiliations included the American Legion Post 440, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 0364, both of Hornell, NY.
An avid skier, Carl was also a member of the Rochester Ski Club. Other interests included reading, travel, computers, golf, construction, barbecuing, gardening, fishing, hunting, and motorcycling.
There will be no calling hours, as the family has requested a private memorial service and interment in the Kreidler Family Cemetery.

While I did not know Carl well, I found him to be a gentleman and enjoyed my interactions with him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I knew Carl during my tenure at the former Bethesda Community Hospital In his role as Hospital Board President, he was very devoted to the hospital, the patients, the employees and the medical staff.
