FLORENCE E. SCHOONOVER

AVOCA-Florence E. Schoonover, 97, of County Route 70, passed away late Easter Sunday evening (April 8, 2012) at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath.
Born in Avoca on July 5, 1914, she was a daughter of the late John and Bessie Fox Cleland. She was married to Hiram Schoonover, who predeceased her on Aug. 6, 1968. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Warren Schoonover in 1979; and her three brothers, Mervin, Shirley and Alva Cleland.
Florence received her honorary diploma from Avoca Central School with the class of 2001 at the age of 86.
For 21 years she was employed as the Avoca Town Clerk, retiring in 1991. Besides farming, she also baked wedding cakes and did catering.
She was a member of the Avoca United Methodist Church since 1924; a member of the Avoca Grange for 71 years; a member of the Avoca Eastern Star and was also a honorary member of the Steuben County Town Clerks Assoc.; serving as president for eight years.
Her family includes her two daughters, Lillian Peterson and Mildred O’Dell both of Avoca; nine grandchildren; many great and great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Marion Towner of Cohocton.
To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday (April 13) at the Howard Cemetery with Pastor Fred Dyer of the Avoca United Methodist Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Avoca United Methodist Church, 8593 Jacobs Ladder Road, Avoca or the Avoca Hose Co. Ambulance Corps, 3 Chase St., Avoca, N.Y. 14809.
Arrangements are with the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca.

  2. My heart goes out to each and every one of you; Millie, Debbie, Tom, Denise, Kristie, Kelly, Sue, Doug, Tim, Scott, Lil and all the little ones who I suppose are not so little any more! Some of the best memories I have are those of times spent with you all and “Grandma Schoonover”. May you all find comfort in knowing that she is at peace.Take Care.
