HORNELL-Cleora M. Carroll, 87, formerly of 1190 County Road 66, died early Wednesday morning (Nov. 23, 2011) at Hornell Gardens, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Galeton, Pa. on May 5, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Sirianni. On June 19, 1948 she was married to Robert A. Carroll, who predeceased her on March 31, 1978 after nearly 30 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her two brothers, Frank and Raymond Sirianni.
A resident of Hornell for most of her life, Cleora graduated from St. Ann’s School in 1937, Hornell High School in 1941 and the Bryant & Stratton Business Institute in Buffalo in 1942.
She was employed as a secretary in Buffalo from 1943 to 1945 and returned to Hornell in August of 1945 at which time she became employed as a stenographer at the Erie Railroad Stores Department until April of 1946. From May 1946 to January of 1949 she was employed as secretary to the President of the former Hornell Industries. From May of 1954 to October of 1962 she was a receptionist and women’s editor at Radio Station WWHG in Hornell. In December of 1962 she entered New York State Civil Service and retired on July 1, 1984 from the State University of New York, Agricultural & Technical College at Alfred, with 22 years of service as an executive secretary to two Vice Presidents of the college.
Cleora was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. A 50 year member of Court St. Ann No. 194, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, she was also a member of the former St. Gerald’s Guild and Women’s Board of St. James Mercy Hospital and also served as a volunteer for over 25 years at the Aquinas Gift Shop at the hospital. Cleora also served for several years as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross and also belonged to the Civil Service Employees’ Association.
Her family includes her two brothers, Richard (Thelma) Sirianni and William Sirianni all of Hornell; her sister-in-law, Marian Sirianni of Saugerties; her beloved companion, Skip Huff of Hornell; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
Those wishing may contribute in her memory to either St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish or to St. Ann’s School Memorial Fund, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.

  1. I was saddened to hear of Cleora’s passing. She was a lovely, beautiful, graceful,kind, personable lady. My condolences to the family. She will certainly be missed!

  2. I am so sorry to hear of Cleoras passing. I know how much she meant to you all. I enjoyed so much taking care of her while I worked at the gardens and seeing Skip and Bill just made the day better. My thoughts and prayers are with you all in your time of loss.

  3. I had the pleasure of working at Alfred State with Cleora for many years. She was a role model and mentor for many of us during her time there.

  4. I worked with Cleora for almost twenty years at Alfred State College. I am sure she will be missed by many people. She was an excellent secretary and very precise with detail. Many others learned from her. The last time I saw her was at the Wellsville Manor a few years ago. So sorry for you, Skip, and the rest of her family.

  5. I remember my Aunt Cleora’s Christmas cards every year. She always sent the most elegant cards with the fancy matching envelopes. Really miss not getting those the last few years.
