LAURA M. FARTHING- DAVIS

HORNELL-Laura Madeleine Farthing- Davis, 94, wife of Charles F. Davis, formerly of County Route 70A, the Big Creek Road, passed away Friday morning (Aug. 5, 2011) at the Cortland Care Center, where she has resided since 2009.
Laura was born Dec. 12, 1916 in Toledo, Ohio to William and Josephine Perrin and was raised in Maumee, Ohio.
Mrs. Farthing-Davis graduated from Maumee High School in 1934, and in 1935, she began a career in the Maumee City Schools as the secretary to the Superintendent; having served six superintendents, she retired in 1982 after a 37 year career.
Not only an active community member, Mrs. Farthing-Davis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee. Confirmed in 1929, she was the oldest member of the congregation, and enjoyed singing in the choir and bowling in the church’s league.
Mrs. Farthing-Davis also enjoyed traveling, playing the piano, playing bridge and pinochle, and spending time with her friends and family. She spent the later years of her life as a resident of Hornell upon marrying Charles F. Davis, a Hornell native, in 1991.
Preceding Mrs. Farthing-Davis in death is her husband of 51 years, Robert A. Farthing; son, Robert M. Farthing; and grandson, Joshua R. Farthing. She is survived by Charles F. Davis, her husband; sons, Bradford A. (Jean) Farthing of Rochester and William Farthing of Westerville, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Diane M. Farthing of Rossford, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; stepson, Kevin (Nancy McKeon) Davis of Groton; stepdaughters, Leslie (Gregory) Porter of Paso Robles, Calif. and Lisa Davis of Delmar; and three step-grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. David Kilgore officiating. Private committal services and interment will follow at the Howard Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 435 E. Henrietta Rd., Rochester, N.Y. 14620 or to the Multiple Sclerosis Resources of Central N.Y., Inc., P.O. Box 237, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
