KEVIN P. SOUTH

HORNELL-Kevin P. South, 25, passed away unexpectedly early Saturday morning (Nov. 13, 2010) at his home on Elizabeth St.
Born at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on June 10, 1985, he was a son of Loren and Mary Bridget Hanrahan South.
Kevin graduated from high school in Arizona and also resided in Buffalo, Rochester and Phoenix, Az. before coming to Hornell five years ago.
He was employed as an assistant manager and Friendly’s in Hornell before he became a manger at the Country Kitchen in Hornell. He was also employed part time at Fingerlakes Marble and Granite in Hornell. Kevin was ambitious, reliable and a hard worker at any position he held.
An avid fisherman, he especially enjoyed fly fishing. He loved animals and was very proud of the fish that he raised in his fish tank that he had at his home. Kevin also loved spending time with his family and many friends. He will be remembered most of all for his ever present smile, his love of others, his generosity and for the soft spot he held in his heart for the elderly.
His family includes his parents, Loren and Bridget of Hornell; his two brothers, David (Sheila) Hanrahan of Elmira and Christopher South of Hornell; his two sisters, Michele South and Brittany South, both of Hornell; his niece and nephew, Emily and Sean Hanrahan; his paternal grandmother, Patricia South of California; also his 10 aunts and uncles and his many cousins.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, William and Geraldine Hanrahan.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to their favorite charity.

  1. Kevin was such a pleasure to always see at the Coutry Kitchen. Kevin did give the elderly so much attention, something you do not always see and it was always noticed how much they enjoyed it. He will be greatly missed by all.

  2. I thought the world of Kevin. He was such a hard and dedicated worker and treated people with such respect and caring. I was very proud to call him my nephew and I will miss him greatly. May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ watch over you and keep you.

  3. We are so sad to hear about Kevin. We have been weekly “regulars” at Country Kitchen for the last couple of years. Kevin was always very kind and thoughtful and made a point to come over to our booth when he wasn’t busy to be sure he said hello and chat for a minute. He was a gentleman and truly did have a soft spot in his heart for the elderly. It was very evident in his personality and demeanor. He would make everyone feel comfortable and “at home” at the restaurant. My husband would never leave until he found Kevin and shook his hand to tell him how wonderful the broiled fish was…and Kevin was always very gracious. He was a very special person, and we will miss Kevin greatly, but we are so proud that we had the chance to get to know him. We extend our sincere sympathy to his family.

  4. Kevin’s welcoming smile and friendliness made a trip to the Country Kitchen so much more enjoyable. I often saw him go out of his way to help someone at the restaurant. To his family, friends, and coworkers, I send my condolences.

  5. You will be forever in my heart, Kevin.
Loren, Briget and family, I love you all and you remain in my prayers.

  8. Kevin, I remember your 1st birthday in Vandenberg. I remember a super nice kid who I spent a lot of time with in Buffalo. You even took me to your school for show and tell. You were so proud to show me the Niagara Falls. Having you as a cousin has been a joy for me. I will miss hearing stories of your big catch. Kevin you will be in my heart forever.

Loren and Bridget, I love you and am praying that the Lord brings you comfort and peace in your time of need and sorrow. Please know that the Lord has a plan and a purpose.

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
