JOHN G. McGREGOR

HORNELL-John G. McGregor, 63, passed away in the presence of his loving family early Wednesday morning (Sept. 29, 2010) at his home at 162 Madison Ave., after a brief illness.
Born in North Hornell on July 7, 1947, he was the son of the late Earl and Maude Garrett McGregor. On Dec. 30, 1967 he was married at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell to the former Kathleen Stone, who survives.
A life long resident of Hornell, John graduated from Hornell High School with the class of 1965 and also attended Alfred State College. From 1966 to his honorable discharge in 1970, he served with the U.S. Navy during Vietnam War on mine sweepers in the Mekong-Delta and was the recipient of the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
John was employed by the former Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, Conrail, General Electric and M-K and retired in 2008 as a project engineer with Alstom in Hornell.
He was a member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post. No 440 in Hornell.
An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed spending time at the cabin on the Swale hunting and at the cottage on Waneta Lake fishing with his grandchildren and his best friend, Tom Morey. John will be remembered for being a “jack of all trades” and for improvising whenever it was deemed necessary. Some of his other favorite pastimes include woodworking and traveling, especially to Winston-Salem, NC to spend time with his daughter, Melissa and her family.
His family includes Kathy, his wife of nearly 43 years; his three daughters, Melissa (Craig) Thomas of Winston-Salem, NC, Heather (Bill) Harwood of Hornell and Holly (Paul) Sisco of Hornell; his 11 grandchildren, Matthew, Katherine & Megan Thomas, Gregory, Michael and Tyler Gibson, Sophia and Chloe-Rose Harwood, Heather, Alayna and Daniel Sisco; his sister, Erla Davis of Hornell; his sister-in-law, Rosemary (Larry) Gleason of Canandaigua; his brother-in-law, Richard Stone of Hornell; also his nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Jan Hollister, Deborah Gilliam and Pat Thompson for the care and compassion that they gave to John in his final hours.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Dorothy Stone, his brother-in-law, Herman Davis, his sister-in-law, Carol Stone and his nephew, Larry Gleason.
There will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 1316 College Avenue, Suite 2, Elmira, NY 14901-1169.
Arrangements are with the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell.

  4. I am so sorry. I have been trying to find John for many years. I wish we had known he had a daughter in NC as we live in NC. I am Marye LeMunyan Badgett. John and my father Cobert LeMunyan were first cousins. John’s mother was my grandmother Mildred LeMunyan’s sister. My families thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  5. To the family of John: I am sorry to hear about John’s passing. I enjoyed working with John over the years and he will be missed.

  6. To the Mcgregor family, John was a great guy and a good friend. He was a mentor to me when I worked with him and I will always remember him with fondness and the utmost respect. May God bless you and help you through this very difficult time.

  7. My favorite Uncle John memory? Easy-the orange Plymouth Duster he drove when I was a kid. I can still picture it parked in Grandma McGregor’s driveway. To Aunt Kathy and the girls- it’s hard for a family to lose such a special man, but you will always have such good memories. I know in my heart he and Herm are together in Heaven.

  8. I will surely miss John. I had alot of fun and good memories of him at Alstom. Especially when he and his dear friend Tom Morey were together. They were more like brothers than close friends. I only got to work with him and know him for a short time there, but he was always so very kind. He was the kind of person you could talk to easily, and joke around with. I had the honor of helping with his retirement party we had at Alstom for him and got to meet his wife whome he loved very much. My prayers go out to him and his family.

  9. So sorry to hear of Johns passing. I will remember him as a good man and as my mentor and supervisor at M&K. He led by example and tought me alot of what I needed to go on with my own career and life. He will not be missed but fondly remembered by all he touched.
