WILLIAM M. “SKIP” BRIDGE

BATH/ARKPORT-Former Mayor of the Village of Arkport, William M. “Skip” Bridge, 72, of 39 Wilson Way, Bath, formerly of Arkport, passed away early Friday morning (March 19, 2010) at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath, following a long illness.
Born in North Hornell on March 28, 1937, he was the son of the late William and Nellie Eiband Bridge. On Jan. 25, 1958 he was married at the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell to the former Nancy A. Seaman, who survives.
A graduate of Arkport Central School, Skip also attended Alfred State College. He built his own home in Arkport where he and Nancy resided for 37 years before moving to Bath in 2001.
He devoted much of his life to the community of Arkport where served as the Mayor for 12 years, as Fire Chief for five years and was instrumental in the construction of the Arkport Community Building.
A natural salesman, Skip enjoyed working and loved being with people. He was employed with Cummings and Bricker Farm Equipment in Batavia, Morton Buildings in Warsaw and retired from Hansen Construction in Bath.
He dearly loved his family and his dogs and enjoyed frequenting coffee shops, mowing his lawn and traveling.
His family includes his wife of 51 years, Nancy; his five children, William P. Bridge of Rush, Vicky (Phil) Wierchowski of Buffalo, Kevin (Shelly) Bridge of Andover, Gail Sears of Alden and Steven Bridge of Andover; his nine grandchildren; his sister, Beverly (Carl) Wellington of Arkport; also his niece and his nephew.
There will be no calling hours. A funeral service that will take place in his memory at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St. in Hornell, with the Rev. David Kilgore officiating. Interment will be in the Arkport Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the Arkport Fire Dept., 6 Park Ave., Arkport, NY 14807 or the Bath Volunteer Ambulance, 110 E. Steuben St., Bath, NY 14810. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.

  1. Skip had a wonderful way with people, and went the extra mile to help out. Even though it had been a while since we last talked, we often talked of Skip. We will miss ya Skip.

  2. We want to send all of the family our sincerest condolences. I remember having a ton of fun with Kevin through the yrs at school, and having laughs with Skip and you Nancy. We will always remember Skip and his tenure as Mayor. Our best wishes for all of you in this time of sorrow.

  3. Our memories of Skip go back to when he was our handsome meter man and then many fun picnics and gatherings in the late 60’s.
