JAMES W. CONNOR
AVOCA-James W. Connor, 90, formerly of Wagner Hill Road, died late Friday afternoon (Jan. 22, 2010) at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath.
Born in Hornell on Nov. 26, 1919, he was a son of the late Charles and Anna Dentlinger Connor. He was married in 1943 at St. Joseph’s Church in Scio to the former Helen Agnes O’Brien, who predeceased him in 2003, after 60 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his son, Mark Connor and his sister, Rita Anne Connor Talbott.
A graduate of Avon High school in 1937, Jim received his bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Michigan in 1942. He was also a graduate of Company F Ordinance Officer Candidate School in Maryland and served his country in the U. S. Army from 1942 to his honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant in 1946
Jim was employed by the former Erie and Erie-Lackawanna Railroads and retired as a Superintendent from Conrail in 1983. Because of his career with the railroad he traveled extensively.
He has been a resident of Avoca where he resided at the family farm on the Wagner Hill Road.
A former member of the Barber Shoppers in Hornell, some of his favorite pastimes include playing the piano, woodworking, mechanical repairs, carpentery and spending time sitting on the porch at his home.
His family includes his three children, Michael (Colleen) Connor of Dover, Ohio, Fr. Patrick Connor of Bradford and Brian (Belinda) Connor of Cohocton; his daughter-in-law, Donna Connor of Pensacola, Fla.; his six grandchildren, Matthew (Jill) Connor, Andrew and Thomas Connor all of Ohio; Charles (Pam) Connor of Cohocton, Sean Connor of Addison and Jessica Connor of Pensacola, Fla.; his three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Caitlin and Nicholas Connor; his brother, Charles (Suzie) Connor of Highland Ranch, Colo.; his brother-in-law, Richard Talbott of Bath, Pa.; also his nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, Dodie and Jim McKechney of Avon as well as the Schwartz Family of Wheeler.
To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to a gathering from 6-9 p.m. Monday at the Wallace Fire Dept. A private service will take place in his memory later this spring.

My condolences to you and your families. The times on Wagner Hill seem so far away and so many years ago. When I do think of those times, both your mom and dad come to mind. They are all good times and good memories. I still remember your dad trying to show my mom (Mickie) how to play the piano. God Bless.
