NORTH HORNELL-Joyce Creswell VanOxx, 99, formerly of Cleveland Ave., died Saturday evening (April 4, 2009) at Hornell Gardens.
Born in Attlebury, Dutchess County on Nov. 20, 1909, she was the daughter of the late John B. and Mae Wilbur Creswell. On New Years Eve, 1930, she was married in Mansfield, Pa. to Delmont “Del” VanOxx of Hornell, who predeceased her on Oct. 21, 1983 after 53 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband she was also predeceased by her brother, Wilbur Creswell.
A graduate of Millbrook High School and Plattsburg Normal School, Joyce came to Hornell in 1919 to teach business at the Hornell High School. After her marriage she continued to teach at the Andover Central School, the former Hornell Business School and retired in 1971 from the Hornell Middle School.
For many years she was an active member and leader of the Camp Fire Girls as well as an active member of the Hornell United Methodist Church.
Her family includes her daughter, Susan Baker of Alfred Station; her son, John VanOxx of Rochester; her six grandchildren, Tracy Clark, Michelle (Eric) Wright, Michael (DeLinda) Baker, Shane Baker, Jason VanOxx and Jennifer (Jason) Flaitz; also her 12 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Interment will be in Rural Cemetery in Hornell at the convenience of her family.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Hornell United Methodist Church, 7528 N. Main St. Ext., Hornell, NY 14843.
