JAMES J. CAPARULO
HORNELL-James J. Caparulo, 85, formerly of 40 Collier St., , entered into rest peacefully, in the presence of his loving family, early Sunday evening (Feb. 10, 2008) in Canandaigua at the home of his daughter, Rose Caparulo, after a long illness.
Born in Elmira on Jan. 23, 1923, he was a son of the late James and Mary Louise Pisano Caparulo. On Nov. 22, 1947, he was married at St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads to the former Mary Arlene Goodrich, who predeceased him on Oct. 1, 2004, after 57 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his three brothers, John, Joseph and Francis Caparulo and his sister, Marie Ogden.
A veteran of World War II, having served with U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, Jim has resided in Hornell since 1964.
He was employed by the former D.L. & W Railroad, the Erie & Erie-Lackawanna Railroads and retired from Conrail as an engineer.
Jim was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church and St. Ignatius Loyola Church. He was third degree member of the Hornell Council No. 243, Knights of Columbus, a member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 and the Cpl. J.J. Mooney VFW Post No. 440 in Hornell, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the Hornell Moose Lodge No. 210, the Hornell Elks Lodge No. 364 and the Hornell Association.
He enjoyed cooking and will be remembered for sharing his cooking skills with several of the clubs and organizations he was associated with.
His family includes his five children, Gary Caparulo of Hornell, Anne (Michael) Cilano of Hornell, Ruth (Carmine) Iorio of Honeoye, James (Sandra) Caparulo of Beaufort, S.C. and Rose Caparulo of Canandaigua; his 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Robert Caparulo of Elmira; his two sisters, Helen Petty of Clearwater, Fla. and Margaret Donahue of Horseheads, also his nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service,with military honors, will be held following calling hours at 7 p.m. Thursday with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 E. Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
