LOWELL JAMES SHERMAN
ARKPORT – Lowell James Sherman, 81, of Tildon Hill Road (Town of Burns) passed away Thursday (April 30, 2026) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, NY.
Born in North Hornell on Dec. 4, 1944 he was a son of the late Orrin and Katherine (Barber) Sherman Smith. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife, Pandora (Boor) Sherman; his step-father, Donald Smith and his great-grandson, Dominic Aulner-Mancilla.
A graduate of Canaseraga Central School, class of 1963, Lowell proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict from 1963 to his honorable discharge in 1965 and continued his service with the Navy Reserves until 1969. Lowell was a former member and past commander of the Fawcett American Legion Post in Canaseraga, NY
Following his military service he was employed at the Foster-Wheeler Corp. in Dansville, NY for 30 plus years.
Lowell had a passion for restoring classic cars and showing them at local car shows. He also loved getting on the road on his Harley Davidsons whenever he could. Lowell enjoyed spending his Sunday afternoons watching the Buffalo Bills and NASCAR. He also enjoyed visiting flea markets and antique stores, hunting and fishing, and growing his own veggies in his garden.
He is lovingly survived by five children, Crystal Mancilla of Omaha, NE, Cary (Melanie) Sherman of Columbia Falls, MT, Candi (Gary) Valentine of Elmira, NY, Jonathan (Cassandra) Boor of Dansville, NY and William Holbrook also of Dansville; three sisters, Marilyn Glenn of Clearwater, FL, Vickie (Burton) Stein of Bishopville, NY and Deanna Bloom of Canisteo, NY; his special companion, Linda Wright; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be an hour of calling from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. TUESDAY (May 19, 2026) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell where a service in memory of Lowell will take place at 12:30 p.m. TUESDAY. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at 2 p.m. at Bath National Cemetery.
The United States flag and the Navy flag will proudly fly at the Bishop-Johnson & Desanto Funeral Home in recognition of Lowell’s military service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38015 or stjude.org. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
