ARKPORT – Lewis James Robords, 96, of Briggs Road, passed away Thursday afternoon (Feb. 13, 2025) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.

Born in North Hornell on Sept. 7, 1928 he was a son of the late Clayton and Harriett (Carman) Robords. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Blanche (Barkley) Robords; one daughter, Karen Kelly; one son, Douglas Robords; three brothers, Jesse, Theodore and David Robords, and two sisters, Iris Ellis and Phyllis Wilkins.

Jim is survived by his wife of nearly six years, Margaret “Pat” (Nephew) Robords; four children, Dianne (Bob) Jones of Birdsboro, PA, William Robords of Dansville, NY, Virginia (Dale) Mecomber of Skaneateles Falls, NY and Brian (Patricia) Robords of Arkport; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of Arkport, Jim was a graduate of Arkport Central School and received a bachelor’s degree from Alfred University.

He converted the Robords Brothers Farm to a dairy farm and operated that for many years and later retired as an alcoholism counselor for Steuben County.

An active member of the Arkport Presbyterian (Community) Church, Jim loved his dogs, bowling, square dancing, bird watching and traveling to tropical locations. In his later years he enjoyed playing cards and being one of the “Ramp Guys” building ramps for Steuben County residents.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 A.M. – 11 A.M. SATURDAY (MARCH 1, 2025) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will take place in his memory at 11 A.M. SATURDAY, with the Rev. Bruce Incze officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Arkport Presbyterian (Community) Church, P.O. Box 6, Arkport, NY 14807 (envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home) or to a favorite animal rescue.

  1. Loved playing cards with Grampa and bird watching the red cardinals and walking the springer spaniels along the everlasting corn fields and farm fields. Walking from our home to Grampa’s through the woods was always a treat. Especially when we would play cards where I feel I learned many life lessons at that card table. Missing Chiper and Fancy such good dogs. Grampa will be missed but that old dog eventually needed to go back home.

  2. We first knew Jim through my in laws and later Doug took piano lessons from me. Jim was always so mild mannered. Quiet, friendly and kind.
Our sincere condolences and prayers for you all. 🙏
