John Joseph “J.J.” McCarthy

HORNELL – John Joseph “J.J.” McCarthy, 54, most recently of Leesburg, Va., passed away on Sunday (June 15, 2025), after a lengthy illness.

Born in Hornell, N.Y. on August 10, 1970, he was the son of John and Sally McCarthy. He was predeceased by his father, John McCarthy, his grandparents John Francis “Mac” and Catherine McCarthy, Howard White, Hester White Shepard, Morris Shepard and his aunt Sue White.

A former resident of Hornell, he was raised in Perry Hall, Md. and later Newport News, Va. He was a 1988 graduate of Homer L. Ferguson High School in Newport News and went on to study business and economics at Christopher Newport University where he graduated in 1992. In 1991, he became the vice president and a founding father of the Pi Lamda Phi fraternity Alpha Psi chapter at C.N.U.

In 1996, he began a 25+ year sales career, first with Anixter and later with Belden, where he was the global account director of U.S. Federal Sales before he was unable to work due to deteriorating health.

J.J. went above and beyond to maintain relationships with friends. He enjoyed watching his daughter Addison play soccer after his playing and coaching days were over. He was a devoted Yankees and Notre Dame fan. J.J was the self-proclaimed family historian and enjoyed the summers spent at the family cottage on Loon Lake. However, his greatest pleasure came from his role as dad to Addison. He will be missed beyond belief.

His loving family includes his daughter, Addison McCarthy of Ashburn, Va., his mother Sally McCarthy of Joppa, Md., his brothers Shawn (Lisa) McCarthy of Newport News, Va. and Brian (Jennifer Erhardt) McCarthy of Joppa, Md; his niece, Mariah (Zach) Jones of Virginia Beach, Va., and nephews Connor McCarthy of Alexandria, Va and Bailey McCarthy of Joppa, Md. He is also survived by his great nephew Oliver Jones. Survivors also include his uncle Howard T. (Wanda) White of Hornell, N.Y. and cousins Brett (Danielle) White of Hornell, Taryn (James) Manuele of Orange, Conn., Jay (Sharon) Krisher of White Marsh, Md., and Michelle Boarder of Hornell.

A graveside service and interment will take place at 10 A.M. SATURDAY (JULY 26, 2025) at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont, N.Y. with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

The family will provide flowers and suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org

    Rest easy, J.J.!! 💔🙏

  3. I had the pleasure of meeting JJ and helping to care for him in his last days. What a wonderful man. His gentle smile and loving spirit will never be forgotten! I am blessed for having cared for him. Peace and love to his family.

  4. The McCarthys and the Barillos were neighbors on Terry Street in Hornell for several years. My memories are numerous and sweet. It was a friendship of our two whole families. We did so many things with the children – I’m remembering a circus, our sitting on the porch watching the kids play, Mike giving the four kids dinner while Sally and I went shopping, John and Mike walking home together after a basketball game. Shaun and J.J. occupy a special place in our hearts. Brian was a small baby at that time.
Our hearts ache for your family as you grieve the loss of your precious son and brother. I hope many happy memories help to ease you pain if only a little. We Will pray for your family, of course and we never never forget you.
Ann Marie Barillo and also, of course, Big Mike, (a name first given him by Shaun), Kim and Michael. 🙏❤️
