Matthew J. Sullivan

CANISTEO – Matthew J. Sullivan, 33, formerly of Spruce Street, entered into rest early Monday morning (Aug. 12, 2024) at Monroe Community Hospital in Rochester, NY from complications of juvenile Huntington’s disease. After being diagnosed with juvenile Huntington’s, Matthew was only expected to live for five years, but actually survived for the past 14 years.

Affectionately known as “Matt” or “Matty”, he was born in Hornell on July 23, 1991 the son of Jack Sullivan, who predeceased him and Darlene (Julian) Spicer, who survives. Besides his father, he was also predeceased by his stepfather, Robert Spicer and his spiritual grandfather, Rev. Dr. Philip Casterline.

A graduate of Hornell High School, class of 2009, Matty resided in Canisteo until becoming a resident of Monroe Community Hospital in Rochester two years ago.

He enjoyed video games and Anime (Japanese cartoons).

He is lovingly survived by his mother, Darlene Sullivan Spicer of Canisteo; one brother, Joshua Julian also of Canisteo; his spiritual grandmother, Marcia (George) Johnson of Hornell; his Godfather, John Robords of Hornell; also several aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to join his family for a dinner, celebrating his life, at 2 p.m. SUNDAY (SEPT. 8, 2024) at the Living Waters Church, 1737 Southyard Road, Hornell.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Monroe Community Hospital, especially the Friendship 3 West staff, aides that assisted in Matt’s care, including, Scottia, the nurse manager and Shawna Gary, the social worker and the doctors and everyone else.

The Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell is honored to assist Matty’s family with the arrangements.

  3. Darlene, & family, I happen to be online & saw this obituary. He was quite a young man. Very respectable. It breaks my heart, because I know what it feels like to lose a child. I wish I had known when I saw you at church. I’m praying for you. I’m here just a phone call away for you.
