Anne M. Gelder

HAMMONDSPORT – Anne Marie (Prendergast) Gelder, 82, passed away peacefully at Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home on February 3, 2024, surrounded by family.  Anne was born on December 19, 1941, and was the daughter of John and Margaret (Colgan) Prendergast of Penn Yan.

Anne graduated from Penn Yan Academy, Class of 1960.  After graduating, Anne went to The Freeman Business Institute in Geneva, NY, to study secretarial science.   Anne was employed in various places as a paraprofessional throughout her career.  One of her favorite places to work was Canandaigua Inn on the Lake. She was also employed by V. R. Foods and Finger Lakes Premier Properties both in Penn Yan. Anne greatly enjoyed the atmosphere, breathtaking lake view, and meeting people from all over the world.   Anne always had a warm, ready smile for everyone.  She was a blessing to have around.

On July 25, 1970, Anne married Charles Gelder at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Penn Yan, NY.  Anne and Charlie made their home in Hammondsport, NY.  Friends and family were always welcome at Anne and Charlie’s, and their place on the lake was a favorite spot for their children’s friends, as well as nieces, nephews, and the close-knit neighborhood.  There are many treasured memories from time spent on the trampoline, at the lake, or in the creek with Chris, Lisa and Colleen.

Anne was an avid reader who thoroughly loved indulging in good books.  She also greatly enjoyed the challenge of completing jigsaw puzzles.  Prior to Anne’s extended illness, she received great joy from driving around and spending time visiting relatives and friends.  She could also be found on the sidelines, happily cheering on Brendan, Kaley, Nathan, Isabelle, and Carter, in whatever sporting event they were participating in.

Anne deeply loved and cherished her family.  She grew up surrounded by siblings and a multitude of cousins.  Anne fostered that love of family in her own children and grandchildren.  All were blessed to have known and been loved by her, including the many pets who shared Anne’s home and heart throughout her life.  Anne was a beloved daughter, sister, mom, grandma, aunt and friend.  She will be greatly and forever missed by all.

Anne is survived by her eldest daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law Eric Pinckney, and their children, Brendan, Kaley and Nathan.  She is also survived by her younger daughter, Colleen Gelder, and Douglas Button, and their children, Isabelle and Carter.  Additionally, Anne is survived by her sisters Mary and Bradley Todd of Penn Yan, Barbara Hlywa of Lansing, and her brothers John and Katherine Prendergast of Geneva, and Michael and Carolyn Prendergast of Galveston, Texas.  She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law, Susan Gelder Rice of Virginia.

Anne was predeceased by her husband Charles V. Gelder, on October 29, 2009, and her son Charles Christopher Gelder (Chris) on October 1, 1994.

There will be an hour of calling from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2024, at St. Gabriel’s Church, 78 Shethar St., Hammondsport where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammondsport. Following the services everyone is welcome to a reception at the Pulteney Fire Hall.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the Hammondsport Fire Dept., 8521 State Route 54, Hammondsport, NY 14840 or to the Pulteney Fire Company, 8891 Brown Road, Pulteney, NY 14874.
