VIRGINIA (ROYCE) “GINNY” DAVIS
HORNELL-Virginia (Royce) “Ginny” Davis, 87, formerly of Maple St., passed away peacefully early Sunday afternoon (March 8, 2009) at Hornell Gardens, after a long illness.
Born in Hornell on March 29, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Helen Looney Royce. On June 24, 1942 she was married in Columbus, Ga. to Clifford B. Davis, who predeceased her on Aug. 29, 1997, after 55 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her two sisters, M. Arlene Clark in 1993 and Mary Alice McGuigan in 2007; also her two nephews, James Clark and Joseph McGuigan.
A life long resident of Hornell, Ginny graduated from Hornell High School with the class of 1939 and attended the former Hornell Business School.
She was employed by the U. S. Government in Washington, D.C. before she began her employment at the former Merrill Hoisery in Hornell, retiring as an inspector in 1977.
Ginny was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. She was also a former member of the Women of the Moose, Hornell Lodge No. 620 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Cpl. J.J. Mooney VFW Post No. 2250 in Hornell.
Her family includes her two daughters, Susan Davis of New York City and Joan (Bruce) Gray of Murraysville, Pa.; her two sons, Philip Davis of Tampa, Fla. and John (Mary) Davis of Canisteo; her four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren also several great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and her four nieces.
Calling hours are from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
