CANISTEO-Shearl A. Barnard, 72, passed away quietly, after a long courageous fight with cancer, in the presence of his loving family, early Sunday morning (Jan. 16, 2022) at his home on Burt Hill Road.
Born in Hornell on Oct. 23, 1949, he was a son of the late Jesse and Lulu (Converse) Barnard. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by one brother, Arthur Barnard.
A lifelong resident of the Hornell/Canisteo area, Shearl was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, class of 1970.
He was employed with the former Erie Railroad, the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, and Conrail before retiring as a machine operator with Norfolk-Southern Railroad in Gang Mills, NY.
Shearl loved horses and throughout the years owned several quarter horses. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially in Alabama with his brother-in-law, Al.
His loving family includes his wife of 46 years, Charlotte (Stanton) Barnard, who he married at the former Spencer United Methodist Church in Hornell on Dec. 12, 1975; three children, Yolande (Michael) Young of Spokane Valley, WA, Valerie Turner of Canisteo and Jason Barnard of Canisteo; two grandchildren, Jolanday Young (age 18) of Spokane Valley, WA and Jacob Evingham (age 17) of Canisteo; three sisters, Ann Baxter of Tyrone, NY, Nancy Bacon of Cameron, NY and Paula Coots of Avon, NY; one brother, Shannon (Gloria) Barnard of Canisteo; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to their favorite charity.
