Sandra J. Schulitz

ROCHESTER/HORNELL – Sandra J. Schulitz, 81, formerly of Hornell, passed away Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 23, 2025) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY.

Born in Hornell on March 24, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Martha (Sweeney) Dunning. On June 25, 1966 she was married at the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell to Roger L. Schulitz, who predeceased her on Jan. 4, 2021 after 54 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her two brothers, Jerry Dunning and Mark Dunning.

A graduate of Hornel High School, Sandy was also a graduate of St. James Hospital School of X-ray Technology in Hornell where she received her certification as an X-ray technician.

She began her career at the former Bethesda Community Hospital in North Hornell, St. James Mercy Hospital and at the medical office of Dr. Peter Auringer in Hornell where she specialized in x-ray and CT scanning. Sandy and Roger resided in Stephens Mills for many years before moving to their home on Lower Glen Avenue in the Town of Hornellsville. In 2013 they moved to Rochester where they were closer to their family and resided at the Episcopal Church Home/River Edge Manor.

While residing in Hornell, Sandy was a long-time communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church where she served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Before moving to Rochester, she was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell and was a former member of the Ladies of Columbus.

Sandy stayed very active at River Edge Manor where she made many close friends. Also, since she was closer to her family she especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is lovingly survived by her two daughters, Patty (David) Lamb and Karen (Andrew) Winden all of Henrietta, NY; four granddaughters, Olivia Lamb (Marc Simon), Hannah Lamb, Allison Winden and Emma Winden (Tommy LaRocca); two sisters-in-law, Patricia Dunning and Diane Dunning; also her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Fred and Jane Schulitz, Gerry and Leslie Schulitz, and Don Schulitz; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church, 35 Erie Ave., Hornell, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in her memory at 10 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 2, 2025). Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Episcopal Church Home, 505 Mt. Hope Ave., Rochester, NY 14620 or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1000 Elmwood Ave., #900, Rochester, NY 14620. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the church.
