RICHARD P. O’BRIEN, SR.

HORNELL-Richard P. O’Brien, Sr. 83, went home to be with his Lord, in the presence of his loving family, on Friday morning (April 11, 2008) at his home at 114 East Avenue.
Born in Hornell on July 30, 1924, he was a son of the late Harold and Bernice Karnes O’Brien. On May 21, 1950, he was married in Canisteo to the former Alice P. Brewster, who predeceased him on Oct. 27, 1997, after 47 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his grandson, Paul O’Brien and his five siblings.
A resident of Hornell for most of his life, he had a great love for his country and proudly served with the U.S. Army 82nd Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II from 1943 to his honorable discharge in 1945.
For 40 years he was employed as an iron worker, retiring from the Iron Workers Local Union in Rochester.
He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and loved animals, especially his dogs, Mitzi and Tina.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, his family includes his five children, Rich O’Brien, Kathy Greeley, Craig O’Brien, Paula Giglio and John O’Brien; his 10 grandchildren, Kari, Tammi, Lori, Bobby, Jessica, Kristen, Erin, Shannon, Sara and Sean; his 14 great-grandchildren, Brendan, Conner, Tyler, Hannah, Collin, Aliceson, Cameron, Bryce, Caleb, Jordan, Shane, Katie, Rebekah and Kaylie; his two sisters, Patricia Hartman and Gloria Rittew; also his nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from 5-7 p.m. today at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. A funeral and committal service, with military honors, will take place at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bath National Cemetery, with the Rev. Donald Maynard officiating.
