Richard James “Rick” Sutfin

HORNELL-Richard James “Rick” Sutfin, 59, was surrounded by his loving family, when he passed away late Sunday morning (Jan. 1, 2023) at his home on Gypsy Hill Road, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in North Hornell on Aug. 16, 1963, he was a son of the late Robert and Gloria (Allen) Sutfin. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by an infant brother, Steven Sutfin and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Joanne Rohan.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Rick was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1981.

He was employed by the United State Postal Service (USPS) for 28 years as a letter carrier; 19 of those years he spent in the Village of North Hornell.

Rick loved animals and volunteered for the Hornell Area Humane Society. He was a talented woodworker and liked to garden. An avid Green Bay Packers fan, he enjoyed playing golf, loved Harleys and traveling; Rick especially enjoyed cruises and trips to the casinos.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 37 years, Colleen (Rohan) Sutfin, who he married on Aug. 3, 1985 at the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell; four brothers, Gary (Kurt Miller) Sutfin, Charles (Dawn) Sutfin, Dave (Arlene) Sutfin and Bill (Karen) Sutfin all of Hornell; two sisters-in-law, Chrissie (Larry) Valentine and Bridget (Joseph) Griswold all of Hornell; two brothers-in-law, Steve Rohan of Hornell and Kevin (Kathy) Rohan of Horseheads, NY; many wonderful nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews; five aunts, Lucille Lockwood and Linda Allen both of Canisteo, NY, Helen Fisk of Clifton Springs, NY, Onnollee Sutfin of South Dansville, NY and Mary O’Connor of Dansville, NY; also several cousins; as well as Rick and Colleen’s rescued fur babies; three dogs, Jax, Clarence and Ella; four cats, Yogi, Boo, Frankie and Baxter.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to their relatives and friends for their support during Rick’s illness; also to CareFirst, St. James Hospital in Hornell and Noyes/Wilmot Cancer Center in Dansville, NY

Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. Sunday (Jan 8, 2023) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell. Relatives and friends are invited to join his family at St. Ann’s Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday (Jan. 9, 2023). Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843 or to Gordy & Friends (a group of volunteers who help chained and penned dogs), P.O. Box 41, Honeoye, NY 14471. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
