MILDRED C. “MILLIE” GATES

HORNELL-Mildred C. “Millie” Gates, 87, formerly of Rockwell St., passed away late Tuesday afternoon (April 26, 2011).
Born in Hornell on Sept. 12, 1923, she was a daughter of the late John and Anna Shutowick Cheresnowsky. On Jan. 8, 1944 she was married in Bolivar to Charles H. “Charlie” Gates, who predeceased her on Feb. 24, 1996 after 52 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her three sisters, Helen Cheresnowsky, Mary Spak and Elizabeth “Betty” Satariano and by her five brothers, Pete, Ted, Joe, Harry and Mike Cheresnowsky.
A resident of Hornell for most of her life, Millie was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of l942.
She was a homemaker and avid golfer as well as a former member of Twin Hickory Golf Club in Hornell. Millie also had been a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell.
Her family includes her daughter, Barbara Jean (Karl) Hurd of Arkport; her son, Harry (Joanne) Gates of Perkinsville; her grandson, Scott (Beth) McMichael of Bishopville; her three great-grandchildren, Dani, Nick and Maggie; her great-great-grandchild, Gracen; her sister, Lillian Howe of Arkport; her brother George Cheresnowsky of Hornell; also her many nieces and nephews.
There will be no public calling hours or funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to their favorite charity.
