MICHAEL J. “MIKE” ASHLEY
HORNELL-Michael J. “Mike” Ashley, 66, passed away early Tuesday morning, (Dec. 20, 2011) at his home at 18 Elmwood Place in Hornell, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Batavia on June 28, 1945, he was a son of the late John and Marietta Moose Ashley.
A former resident of Arkport, Mike was a graduate of Dansville Central School, class of 1964. From 1964 to 1967 he proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Rifle Marksman Award. He continued to serve with the U. S. Army Reserves from 1967 to 1970.
For most of his life Mike was self employed as a carpenter and was a member of the Fingerlakes Woodturners Club.
He enjoyed woodworking and cooking and would often cater parties for family and friends.
His family includes his two children, Tammy (Matthew) Williams of Dansville and Robert (Jennifer) Ashley of Dansville; his two grandchildren, Olivia Williams and Julia Mason; his loving companion, Nancy Moore of Hornell; her parents, Ernest and Flossie Moore of Almond; and her brother, Gary ( Mary ) Moore of Geneseo; his two sisters, Kathryn (Floyd) Burns of South Carolina and Shirley Ashley of Florida; his two brothers, John Ashley and James Ashley both of South Carolina; also several nieces, nephews, cousins and his very special “buddy” Emily Fuller of Arkport.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Ann Burns.
Calling hours are from 3-7 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 29) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held in his memory following calling hours at 7 p.m. Thursday, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.
Committal services and interment, with military honors, will be at the Bath National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The United States Flag and the Army flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of Mike’s service with the U.S. Army.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Road, Corning, N.Y. 14830 or to the Oncology Department of the Buffalo V.A. Medical Center, 3496 Bailey Ave., Buffalo, N.Y. 14215. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
