Mary Crow Pieklo

HORNELL – Mary Crow Pieklo, of Hornell, lost a short battle with cancer on Friday, February 18, 2022. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 11, 1962, to Joan Wingert Crow and the late Spencer Crow, who passed away on January 1, 2022.

Mary was a graduate of Arkport Central School and Syracuse Business Institute where she studied to be a medical secretary. She then worked for Noyes Memorial Hospital, Dr. Al-Sinjari, and St. James Mercy Hospital. For over 30 years, Mary worked for her brother-in- law, Dr. Thomas Pieklo. Upon her retirement she worked for Our Lady of the Valley Parish and provided cleaning services for several local families. She worked for the City of Hornell as a police matron and crossing guard. She loved seeing kids safely to school, often giving them holiday treats and listening to them talk about their school day.

In 1984 she married Raymond Pieklo in Fort Benning, GA. Mary and Ray live in Hornell where they raised their two children and are faithful communicants of Our Lady of the Valley Parish. Mary was deeply involved in her community, always offering help to others. She was a member of the Hornell Business and Professional Women, the past Regent of Catholic Daughters of America, and a member of the Ladies of Columbus. Mary enjoyed her volunteer work with Faith in Action and the Community Sunday Meal Program.

Mary loved spending time with her grandchildren. She let them make messes doing craft projects, played pretend, listened to them read and talk for hours, and was a constant source of chocolate and snuggles. She enjoyed gardening, volunteering her time, biking, hiking, exploring regional parks, and exercising at the Hornell YMCA. She also enjoyed traveling to South Carolina and Minnesota to visit family.

Mary was predeceased by her father, Spencer Crow of Murrells Inlet, SC; her grandmother, Zaida Welch and her step-grandfather, George Welch, both of Hornell.

Mary is survived by her husband of 38 years, Raymond Pieklo of Hornell; mother, Joan Crow of Murrells Inlet, SC; brother, Lee Crow of Virginia Beach, VA and sisters, Rebecca Rose of Hornell and Suzanne Larochelle (Richard) of Lunenburg, MA. She is also survived by her two children, Mary Stenson (Matthew) of St. Joseph, MN and Matthew (Brittany South) of Spartanburg, SC. Mary loved spending time with her five grandchildren, Colten and Rohan Stenson and Lucas, Greyson, and Isabelle Pieklo. Mary is also survived by several brothers and sisters- in- law, nieces, and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family at St. Ann’s Church, 31 Erie Ave., Hornell where a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for both Mary and her father, Spencer Crow at 10 a.m. this Friday, February 25, 2022. Committal prayers and interment for Mary and Spencer will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

Additionally, donations in remembrance of Spencer Crow may be made to the Hornell YMCA, 18 Center St., Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the church.
