MARY AGNES CAVALLETTI

HORNELL-Mary Agnes Cavalletti, 85, of 15 Allen St., passed away Monday morning (Oct. 25, 2010) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell, with her loving husband at her side.
Born in Hornell on Nov. 25, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Leo and Margaret Wood Didas. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother, Leo Didas, who was pilot killed in action during World War II
A life long resident of Hornell, Mary Agnes was a graduate of St Ann’s School and Hornell High School, class of 1942.
She was employed at Steuben Trust Co. and for the former Erie Railroad at the Freight Office in Hornell and for about eight years she was employed as a civil engineer by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) in Hornell.
Mary Agnes was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church where she attended daily Mass and was a member of the choir. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Hornell Erie Federal Credit Union and was a member of the St. Ann’s School Alumni Association and the Hornell High School Alumni.
A volunteer for Meals on Wheels, she also enjoyed baking and walking. Gardening was another one of her favorite pastimes and she loved to spend time maintaining both a vegetable and a beautiful flower garden at her home.
Mary Agnes may be considered a ” woman before her time” because she was also a licensed pilot.
Her family includes her husband, Anthony “Tony” Cavalletti; her two daughters, Karen Heckel and Peg Hudacsek both of Canisteo; her grandson, Peter Heckel of Hornell; her great-granddaughter, Sadie Heckel of Hornell; her two sisters, Corrine (James) Prunoske of Hornell and Sr. Mary Leona Didas, RSM of Elmira; her niece, Jane (David) Bearclough; her nephew, James (Jeannine) Prunoske; also her three great-nieces and one great nephew.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either St. Ann’s School Alumni Assoc., 27 Erie Ave., Hornell or to the Hornell High School Alumni Assoc., PO Box 135, Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
