Margaret Carrig
CANISTEO- Margaret Carrig, 83, of Canisteo departed this life on Friday (Feb. 4, 2022) at UR Medicine/Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was the beloved wife of Raymond Carrig, mother of Dr. Barbara Moehring, grandmother of Charlotte and Brendan, and friend to many.
Margaret Congelli was born on May 13, 1938, in Hornell to the late Anna (Iervalino) McMahon and Gerard Congelli. She attended St. Ann’s School and graduated Hornell High School in 1959. Margaret, known as “Maggie” to close high school friends, was always good natured and had a heart with room for every joy. On June 17, 1967 Margaret married Raymond Carrig. They had one daughter Barbara.
Margaret was a hard worker all her life and started working at Harvey and Carey Drug Store in Hornell as a teenager. Following high school, she went to work as a telephone operator at New York Telephone Company in Hornell. After more than twenty years there she eventually ended her first career as a supervisor with AT&T. Her second career was at ACES food services at Alfred State College, cooking and baking for students and faculty alike, and being a “mom” away from home to many students over her long career there. Following her formal retirement, and never one to sit still for long, Margaret could be found working at Walmart and cooking for the golfers at the Twin Hickory Golf Club in Hornell.
During her free time, Margaret liked to travel and often spent the winters in New Port Richey, Florida at their condo. She also enjoyed visiting her daughter and grandchildren in Connecticut. While at home, she could be found in her yard working on the lawn, planting flowers, decorating the house, and above all, always cooking something delicious in the kitchen.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her half-sister, Patricia “Patty” (McMahon) Flansburg and her husband John.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 54 years Raymond Carrig, daughter Barbara, and two grandchildren, Charlotte and Brendan of Newtown, CT; two brothers, James Congelli (Katie) of Lakeland, FL and John Congelli of Hornell; numerous much-loved nieces and nephews both near, and far.
