LESLIE E. MEAD, JR.
HORNELL-Leslie E. Mead, Jr., 61, of 8265 Madison Ave., passed away early Tuesday morning (Feb. 5, 2013) in the presence of his loving family, at the home of his daughter, Ann Burdett, after a seven month battle with cancer.
Born in Hornell on Sept. 28, 1951, he was a son of the late Leslie E. Mead, Sr. and Marion Williams Mead. On June 3, 1972 he was married in Hornell to the former Candace M. Groves, who survives.
A lifelong resident of Hornell, Les was a graduate of Hornell High School, Class of 1971 and proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force from 1971to his honorable discharge in 1975.
For the past 14 years he has been employed with Kraft Foods in Avon.
Les was an avid Buffalo Bill fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseback riding.
His family includes his wife of 40 years, Candace; his four children, Ann (Koty) Burdett, Leslie Mead III, Tammy (Gregory) Cady and Stacy Mead all of Hornell; his 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his two brothers, Merle Mead and Lawrence (Collette) Mead all of Hornell; his four sisters, Linda (Richard) Burchard and Marie (Bill) Edwards all of Hornell, Marlene (Emanon) Peeso of Liverpool and Mable (Sullie) Morabito of Virginia; also his many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his special friend, Edith Blake of Hornell.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Tonya Whitaker in 2008.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 6-7 p.m. Friday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral and committal service will be held following calling hours at 7 p.m., with Robin Burdett officiating. . Private interment, with military honors, will be held at Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
The United States flag and the Air Force flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of Leslie’s military service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either, CareFirst (formerly Southern Tier Hospice), 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, N.Y. 14830 (envelopes will be available at the funeral home), to a memorial fund established for his daughter, Tonya’s children, in care of Ann Burdett, 7048 Burdett Rd., Hornell, N.Y. 14843 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
