LAVONNE L. “TINY” HESS

ARKPORT-Lavonne L. “Tiny” Hess, 76, formerly of the Bishopville Road, passed away peacefully Friday evening (March 26, 2010) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell, after a long illness.
Born in Hornell on Dec. 8, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Burton and Hattie McDonald Brott, On Oct. 17, 1953 she was married in Hornell to Kenneth E. “Ken” Hess, who predeceased her on Oct. 10, 2001 after 48 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her brother, William Brott and her three sisters, Mary Powers, Phyllis Stratton and Bertha Smith.
A graduate of Hornell High School, Lavonne resided at her Bishopville Road home for nearly 50 years.
She enjoyed attending the senior citizen luncheons in Canaseraga where she was also a member of the Young of Hearts.
Lavonne loved to go to flea markets and yard sales and also spent time doing arts and crafts and flower gardening.
A loving mother and grandmother, her family includes her three daughters, Sandy (Bob) Estey, Mary Jo (Duane) VanSkiver and Christine King all of Arkport; her two sons, Thomas Hess of Rochester and William Hess of Almond; her 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; her special friend and companion Earnest Gordon of Canaseraga; her sister, Barbara (Dick) Green of Canisteo; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from 3-6 p.m. Monday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral and committal service will take place in her memory following calling hours at 6 p.m. Monday, with Pastor Terry Kelly and Chaplain Astuti Bijlefeld officiating.
Interment will be in the Arkport Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Hornell Area Humane Society, PO Box 533, Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
Lavonne’s family expresses their grateful appreciation to the wonderful staff of Cranberry Lane at McAuley Manor for the excellent care their mother received these past few months.
