IRONDEQUOIT/NORTH HORNELL – Joseph F. Dick, 72, of Irondequoit, NY formerly of North Hornell, passed away Monday morning (Jan. 8, 2023) at the home of his son, Damian in Irondequoit, after a long illness.

Born in Hornell on July 11, 1951 he was a son of the late John and Bernice (Stuck) Dick. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by three brothers, Robert “Bob” Dick, Karl Kunold and John “JP” Dick and two sisters, Carol Ann “Charlie” Gemmell and Judith “Judy” Callahan.

A graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1969, Joe was employed by the NYS Department of Corrections for more than 30 years, retiring as a supervisor.

Very active in community affairs, he was a member of the North Hornell Volunteer Fire Dept. for 35 years and held various positions including Fire Chief. He was also a former trustee of the North Hornell Village Board and former chairman of the Town of Hornellsville Planning Board.

Joe was a member of the Hornell High School Alumni Association and served as a swimming referee for the NYS Public High School Athletic Association and was a member of the “chain gang” for more than 30 years for the Hornell High School Football.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Lou (Barney) Dick, who he married on July 31, 1976; one son, Damian Dick (Victor Santiago); three sisters, Carol Sue Steinfurth. Sharon Prentice and Karen (Mickey) Mattie; one brother, James (Sally) Dick; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 12 Noon-2 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 13, 2023) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell where a funeral service will take place in his memory following calling hours at 2 p.m. Saturday with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the North Hornell Volunteer Fire Dept., 1 West Maplewood Ave., Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
