HORNELL-Joseph D. Foreman, 73, of Genesee Street, passed away unexpectedly late Monday evening (Dec. 12, 2022) at his home in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Born in Hornell on Nov. 30, 1949, he was the son of the late John and Rita (Mooney) Foreman.

A resident of Hornell for most of his life, Joe was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School. Joseph’s additional educational achievements include and Associate of Science Degree (A.S.) in Political Science at Monroe Community College; a Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.S.) in Sociology at SUNY Cortland; a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Education at Elmira College and a Master of Social Work (MSW) at the University of Kentucky.  While he was at the University of Kentucky, he worked for the Athletic Department tutoring Division I athletes.  He truly loved UK and was a “walking billboard” for them. Joe participated in athletics throughout his entire college years and beyond.

Joseph was employed by SUNY Alfred for more than 40 years as a Professor of Psychology and Human Services.  He was nominated several years to “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”.  Also, while at Alfred he was Advisor to Psi Beta National Psychology Honor Society.  Joseph was nominated for Alumni Teacher of the Year award for 14 consecutive years and was recipient of this award in 1989. Upon his retirement his received the status of Professor Emeritus. Joseph was also employed as a probation officer with Steuben County from 1974 – 1978.

Joe was very community minded and served as a Hornell City Alderman for 40 years and served on the boards of Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and the Hornell Concern for Youth. He was also a member of the Hornell Council No. 243, Knights of Columbus, the Hornell Elks Lodge, No. 364, the Hornell High School Alumni Association and the University of Kentucky Alumni Association. He was an avid golfer and for many years he was a member of the Twin Hickory Golf Club in Hornell.

He was a devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather and brother who loved raising his family and especially enjoyed traveling and spending several months a year in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy (Lauterborn) Foreman who he married at the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell on July 29, 1983; four children, Erik Briggs of Arkport, Alice Briggs of Sebastopol, CA, Elizabeth Briggs of Tamworth, NH and Jonathan Foreman of Manassas, VA; six grandchildren, Erin and Justin Briggs, Isabella and Rhome D’Amico, Kyle and Lucas Foreman; one sister, Margaret Pomeroy and one niece and god daughter, Michelle Pomeroy, both of Hornell; as well as several cousins. He is predeceased by his parents John and Rita (Mooney) Foreman and his brother-in-law, Charles Pomeroy.

Calling hours are 4-6 p.m. Friday (Jan. 6, 2023) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell where a funeral service will take place in his memory at 11 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 7, 2023) with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.
