John J. Petrilli

HORNELL-John J. “Johnny Joe” Petrilli, 76, of Fulton Street, entered into rest early Saturday morning (Dec. 24, 2022) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.

Born in Hornell on Dec. 5, 1946, John was a lifelong resident of Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1965 and attended Corning Community College. After graduating from high school, he proudly served with the United States Air Force until his honorable discharge as a Sergeant in 1968.

John was employed by the former Men’s Shop on Main Street in Hornell before he became employed with Foster-Wheeler Energy Corporation in Dansville. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at the City of Hornell Water Treatment Plant.

For many years he was active in youth sports in Hornell and coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. John also served on the City of Hornell Planning Board and was involved with the Maple City Sound Drum & Bugle Corps shows and was active with the Class of 1965 reunions.

He was very proud of being a veteran and was also proud of all those who served in the military and volunteered for Wreath Across America. John was a very creative person who enjoyed doing woodworking and other craft projects. He liked to travel and loved Notre Dame Football and enjoyed attending games and watching them on television.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 39 years, Christine (Dunham) Petrilli, who he married in Ossian, NY on Dec. 23, 1983; two daughters, Jamie Petrilli and Danielle Petrilli, both of Hornell; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Carol (Donald) Marlatt and Barbara (Dale) Warters.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 2-3 p.m. Friday (Dec. 30, 2022) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell where military honors and a funeral service will take place in his memory at 3 p.m. Friday, with Pastor Cedric Cooper officiating. Interment will be at Bath National Cemetery.

The United States flag and the Air Force flag will proudly fly at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home in recognition of John’s military service

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belford Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256 (envelopes will be available at the funeral home) or to either the Hornell Little League or the Hornell Area Babe Ruth League.
