HAMMONDSPORT – Jean R. Morrison, age 98, a longtime resident of Hammondsport, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 10, 2022 with her son by her side. Jean was born in Blossburg, PA in 1923, the only child of Harold and Pearl Turnbull Gifford. She lived in Blossburg during her early years before moving to Little Marsh after her mother remarried. She is survived by a son Jay Flannery (Sandra) of Liverpool, NY, a daughter Coral Pennetti (James) of Canton, Ohio, grandsons Jay Flannery Jr. (Javona) of Atlanta and Jeffrey Flannery of Anchorage, beloved great granddaughter Emma Jean, nephew Francis Paquin (Beverly), Canton, Ohio and niece Jean Paquin of North Canton, Ohio.

After graduation from high school Jean moved to Elmira where she attended Elmira Business Institute, working for a time at Rosenbaum’s and Hygia in the bookkeeping department. Following in the footsteps of her mother who was a registered nurse, Jean eventually enrolled at St. James Hospital School of Nursing in Hornell; graduating in 1951. In the early 50s she worked briefly at both the former Blossburg State Hospital and Soldiers & Sailors Hospital in Wellsboro before eventually accepting a job at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bath. Most of her 25 years at the VA, were spent on 3B, where she was known as an outstanding and compassionate RN. Following her retirement in 1977, she and her husband built a home in Sarasota where they spent each winter until 2002. In 2002 she was predeceased by her husband of 24 years, George E. Morrison, the well-known former owner of Lakeview Place on Lake Salubria in Bath. Jean, in her retirement years, always enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and visiting her many lifetime friends.

At Jean’s request, services will be private and at the convenience of the family who will provide flowers. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember her may donate to Carefirst Hospice Care, 3805 Meads Creek Rd., Painted Post, NY 14870, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 388 Upper Oakwood Ave. Elmira, New York 14903, or a charity of one’s choice. A special thank you to caregivers Helen and Norma who gave Jean comfort and extraordinary care during her final days.

Jean will be laid to rest next to her husband at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammondsport, NY.
