JANICE M. FAWCETT

HORNELL-Janice M. Fawcett, 92, formerly of Seneca Road and a resident of Updyke’s Willow Ridge in Hornell for the past six years, where she received loving and compassionate care, passed away Friday afternoon (May 4, 2012) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell.
Born in Livonia on Dec. 4, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Francis and Helen Ryan Meagher. On July 7, 1945 she was married in San Diego, Calif. to George A. Fawcett, who predeceased her on Dec. 23, 2008 after 63 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Francis “Frank” Fawcett; her son-in-law, Stephen Terry; her three brothers, Kenneth, James and Thomas Meagher; her two sisters, Norine Meagher and Margaret Amsden; and her special niece, Carol Wellington.
A graduate of Livonia High School, Janice received her teacher’s certificate from Geneseo Normal School and in 1967 she received her bachelor’s degree in education from Geneseo State College.
She was employed as a Fifth Grade teacher for the Hornell City School District at the former Lincoln School until December of 1958.
In 1954 the Fawcett family purchased The Big Elms Restaurant and in 1958 Janice began assisting George in serving the Hornell community until their retirement in September of 1989.
A communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church and most recently of St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell, she was also a former member of the St. James Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and the AZB Sorority.
Her family includes her three children, Arthur Charles “Chuck” (Christina) Fawcett of Las Vegas, Nev., Margaret Fawcett Terry (Mark VanDurme) of Hornell and George Michael “Mike” Fawcett of Rochester; her daughter-in-law, Laura Prete of Hornell; her five grandchildren, Christopher (Erin) Fawcett, Shawn Fawcett, Holly Fawcett, Ryan Terry and Sean Terry; her five great-grandchildren, Aaron O’Brien, Daylan Wetherbee, Kylie Fawcett, Lorraine Fawcett Kern and Kelsey Fawcett; also several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
