JAMES I. “J.I.” DAY

HORNELL-James I. “J.I.” Day, 68, passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning (Nov. 14, 2010) at his home at 6654 Beecher Drive.
Born in Hornell on April 12, 1942, he was a son of the late Chauncey and Dolores McElroy Day.
A life long resident of Hornell, Jim attended the former Lincoln School and graduated from St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School.
The railroad was his life which was evident because of his employment with the former Erie and Erie-Lackawanna Railroads and Conrail before he became employed in Hornell with General Electric, M-K, Amerail, retiring from Alstom as a plant superintendent.
He attended the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann’s Church in Hornell and was also a member of the the Association and the AmVets Post No. 245 in Hornell.
“J.I.” enjoyed cooking and loved dogs, especially Nickey. He will be remembered most of all for being the “CEO” at the Southside.
He was formerly married to Elaine “Kay” Shepard Day, who survives. His family also includes his seven children, Peter (Lila) Day of Boynton Beach, Fla., Shawn (Jackie) Day of Hornell, Terry (Jimmy Joe) Giglio, with whom he resided, Gary Day of Hornell, Jason (Kris) Day of Hornell, Christopher (Jessica) Day of Little Elm, Tx. and Melissa Day of Hornell; his 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his three brothers, John “Jack” (Elizabeth) Day of Weston, Conn., Joseph Day (Ellen Stewart) of Hornell and Jeremiah “Jerry” (Sheila) Day of Hornell; also his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his nephew, Lt. John “Boots” Day.
Calling hours are from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Parkway, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
