Ida S. (Newell) Schmitz

HORNELL-Ida S. (Newell) Schmitz, 83, of Hornell passed away peacefully Saturday morning (April 11, 2020) at Steuben Center in Bath.

Id was born in North Hornell on March 6, 1937 and was the daughter of the late Merle and Ida (Gray) Newell. She was married in Hornell on April 2, 1960, to the love of her life, James Schmitz, who predeceased her on February 10, 2015. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving brother, James.

A lifelong resident of the Hornell/Arkport area, Ida was a graduate of Hornell High School Class of 1956.

Ida was employed for over 30 years as a waitress for several Hornell restaurants. Waitressing was more than a job to “Ida Sweet Apple Cider”, it was her life passion. She was loved by all of her customers because of her bubbly personality and friendliness. She always made everyone smile.

In the earlier days, Ida and Jim were avid bowlers and throughout their 55 years of marriage, they would take daily drives around the area country side looking for deer.

Id a is survived by her daughter, Susan (Tom) Dailey of Canisteo; three grandchildren, Shawn (Stacy) Dailey of Buffalo, Nicholas (Lisa) Dailey of Hornell and Staci (Jared) Zigenfus of Hornell; four great-grandchildren, Nora and Owen Zignefus, Harper Dailey and Jackson Dailey; four brothers, Jerry (Mary) Newell of Albany, Merle Newell of Hornell, Charles (Marilyn) Newell of Rochester and George Newell of Hornell; also her sister, Betty (Norman) Avery of Hornell as well as several nieces and nephews.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell is honored to serve the family of Ida S. (Newell) Schmitz.

To honor her request there will be no calling hours or funeral service.
