Herman A. Notz

HORNELL – Herman Armand Notz, 96 passed away peacefully on Friday July 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He had been a resident of Elderwood in Hornell the past 3 ½ years.

Herman was born November 5, 1928, to the late Herman and Mary (Scharf) Notz in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Following graduation from North Scranton High School, he enlisted at the age of 17 in the US Air Force. He completed basic training at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida in 1946 and then finished (039) Cable Splicing School at Scott Field, Illinois. His first duty station was in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska from 1947-1949 where he earned the rank of Sergeant. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1949 and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal for his contributions to the war effort. Upon returning to Scranton, Herm continued his service in the US Air Force Reserves from 1949-1953 and then enlisted in the US Army Reserves where he was discharged in 1956. He also enrolled in the Valverde School of Cabinetmaking, becoming a carpenter.

Herm worked hard his entire life providing for his family. He was employed by McMahon Brothers Exterminating of Binghamton being transferred to Hornell in 1963. He many times worked two jobs but still found time to enjoy family and friends. He was also employed by Hollands Lumber before moving to Titusville Florida in 1975. He worked in construction until he became employed as a corrections officer for the Brevard County Department of Corrections in 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He was not a sit still individual, so he began volunteering for Meals on Wheels and was an active member of the Neighborhood Watch- Citizens on Patrol Program. He was recognized with several awards for his years of service in the prison system and volunteering efforts. He also was a Red Cross blood and platelet donor where he was named a member of the “50 Gallon Club.” Herm was a life member of the Arkport American Legion and a dedicated Chicago Cubs fan. He returned to Hornell in 2011 to be closer to family and his NY friends. Herm was a lifetime member of the Arkport American Legion and the Florida VFW 5440. He became a resident of Elderwood of Hornell in 2022 after failing health.

Herman was predeceased by his siblings, John, William and Mary, his first wife Louise Hack Crain and his significant other Barbara Bruns of Florida.

He is survived by his three daughters: Nancy, married to Tom Fagnan; Pamela, married to William Schwartz and Judy Notz. His grandchildren are Lynnette Lawrence (Darryn DuShane), Bridgette (Chris) DuChane, Bobby (Ashley) Eveland, Tommy Eveland, Brittany (Jessie) Hite, Yvetta Schwartz, Bear (Heaven) Schwartz. His great grandchildren Everett and Eli DuChane, Greyson and Memphis Eveland, Tyler and Adley Eveland, Parker and Jack Hite and Chase Schwartz.

The family thanks the Elderwood and Optum nursing staff, therapies, activities (especially Bridget), housekeeping, dietary and his favorite “Miss America’s” for their compassion and care given to our dad during his residency. He made many new friends who will not be forgotten. We deeply appreciate the care he received.

There will be an hour of calling from 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. THURSDAY (JULY 24, 2025) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell. A committal service, officiated by Deacon Robert McCormick, will take place at 11 A.M. FRIDAY (JULY 25, 2025) at Bath National Cemetery, followed by full military honors.
