GEORGE W. BOOZ

NORTH HORNELL-George W. Booz, 89, a former resident of First St. in North Hornell and Updyke’s Willow Ridge in Hornell, passed away Tuesday morning (July 30, 2013) at the Richfield Nursing Center in Salem, Va., where he has resided the past several months.
Born in Camden, N.J. on Sept. 7, 1923, he was a son of the late George W. and Marie M. Gaross Booz. On Sept. 5, 1959 he was married at the former St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hornell to the former, Carolyn Benson, who predeceased him on Jan. 29, 2004 after 45 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his brother, Jack Booz and his sister, Marie Allen.
A graduate of Camden (N.J.) Senior High School , class of 1941, George also received a bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering from the Philadelphia College of Textiles & Sciences.
He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army in Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland during World War II from 1943 to his honorable discharge in 1946; and was a recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
George came to Hornell in 1950 and resided in the Village of North Hornell from 1955 until 2006 at which time he became a resident of Updyke’s Willow Ridge in Hornell.
For 39 years he was employed at Stern & Stern Textiles, Inc. in Hornell, retiring in 1989 as a Chief Designer and General Manager.
A member of the former St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hornell, he was also a former member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell; and after his retirement he served as a volunteer at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
George loved to travel and he also enjoyed reading, cooking; and while residing at his home in North Hornell he spent many hours caring for his lawn as well as his flowers and his vegetable garden.
His surviving family includes several nieces and nephews.
To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours. A committal service, with military honors, will be held in his memory, at the convenience of the family, at Bath National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to their favorite charity.
