GEORGE A. MITCHELL

AVOCA-George A. Mitchell, 95 of Mitchell Drive, passed away Saturday morning (Feb. 4, 2017) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Born in Beaver Springs, Pa. on Feb. 13, 1921, he was a son of the late Raymond and Mary (Shaffer) Mitchell. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Arlene Wheaton and his brother, Bill Mitchell.
George proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to his honorable discharge in 1945. He was the recipient of the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 star, the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
His main interest in life was work. Throughout his working career he was a truck driver, farmer, an aerial crop sprayer, and was a saw operator at Southern Tier Pallett in Avoca.
George was a member of the Cohocton Historical Society.
His loving family includes his six children, James Mitchell of Avoca, Joyce Kromer of North Carolina, Wayne (Judy) Mitchell of Avoca, Dianne Gray of Ohio, Doug (Patty) Gilbert of Bath and John (Sally) Mitchell of Avoca; his eight grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews.
The Avoca Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of George A. Mitchell.
Calling hours are from noon-2 p.m. Thursday at the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St. in Avoca, where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at 2 p.m. Thursday with Paul Palmer of Nunda officiating. Committal services, with military honors, will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.
