HORNELL-Gail B. Murphy, 69, passed away Sunday morning (Nov. 6, 2022) at her home on Crosby Street after a recent battle with cancer.
Born in Dansville, NY on Aug. 4, 1953 she was a daughter of the late Louis and Margaret (Nye) Blake. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by one brother, William Blake, her sister-in-law, Deborah Lyke, father-in-law, William T. Murphy and her niece, Amanda Blake.
A graduate of Dansville Central School, Gail also attended St. James School of Nursing in Hornell where she received her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification. She began her nursing career in the ICU and Maternity ward at the Dansville Hospital. Gail later became employed with the news bureau of Alfred University before she began her 17 years of employment with the Hornell City School District as a nurse at the Intermediate School and retired from the Bryant School.
Gail was an avid collector and enjoyed going to yard sales. She operated her own antique business for several years.
She will be remembered for being a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and sister. She was also loved by her students and friends of her children.
She is lovingly survived by her husband of 48 years, William T. “Bill” Murphy II, who she married in Dansville, NY on Feb. 2, 1974; three children, Marie (James) Hall of Hornell, Patrick (Carrie) Murphy of Hornell and Timothy (Maria) Murphy of Almond, NY; 11 grandchildren, Collin, William T III, Grace and Ireland Murphy, Evan, Margaret and Murphy Hall, Isabella, Jamison, Camden and Emersyn Murphy; two sisters, Lois (Edward) Kuba of Florida and Carol (Bruce) Chyka of Kansas; one brother, Thomas (Maria) Blake of Florida; a sister-in-law, Eileen Blake of Dansville, NY; her mother-in- law, Marilyn Murphy and sisters-in-law, Jennifer (John) Beckerman and Bridget Murphy; and a brother-in-law, Larry Lyke; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Gail was one of the most generous and loving people on the planet. She made the world a better place just by being in it, and she was not afraid to give fate a nudge here and there. This is not good bye, it’s see you later.
Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Friday (Nov. 11, 2022) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home,285 Main St., Hornell. Relatives and friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church, 31 Erie Ave. Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in her memory at 10 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 12, 2022). Interment will be in Bath National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to CareFirst (Hospice), 3805 Meads Creek Road, Painted Post, NY 14870 (envelopes will be available at the funeral home) or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
