Frederick W. Nichols

Avoca-Frederick W. Nichols, 83, passed away late Monday night (Dec. 26, 2011) at Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls.
Born in Bath on Sept. 6, 1928, he was a son of the late Ivan and Nellie Nichols.
Frederick proudly served his country in both the Navy and the Marines as a Medic in the Korean War.
He was married on April 2, 1955 to Barbara Francis Nichols who survives.
Frederick retired in 1983 from the Bath V.A. after 37 years of service. He also worked for Avoca Central School as a Bus Driver and custodian.
He was an avid reader, fisherman and gardener; he was also quite the handyman doing a lot of work for Doctors at the V.A. He was a member of the Avoca United Methodist Church, Avoca Fire and Ambulance Company and a member of the Avoca Masons but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
His family includes his wife of over 56 years, Barbara; his children, Jay (Michelle) Nichols of Avoca, Susan Hojnoski of Avoca, Alan Nichols of Beaver Dams and Jane Nichols of Beaver Dams, his 11 grandchildren, Andrew, Jonathon (Cassie) and Christopher Hojnoski, Amy (Daniel)
Carpenter, Emily and Lucas Nichols, Krista Nichols (Joe Simpson), Julie and Phillip Nichols and Adam and Bradley Zurlick; his 4 great-grandchildren Kaiden, Rilea and Emmet Hojnoski and Camdyn Simpson; his sisters, Marge (Clifford) Parsons of Montour Falls, Betty Eastman of New Mexico and Anne (Kenneth) Beckhorn of Coopers Plains; a sister-in-law Mabel Nichols of Nelson Pa.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son Peter, brothers Robert, Charles and Loren, a sister Amelia and a brother-in-law Howard Eastman.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 30, 2011) at the Avoca United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Nondaga Cemetery in Bath.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the Avoca Fire and Ambulance Company or to the Avoca Free Library.
