ELEANOR M. BLY
NORTH HORNELL-Eleanor M. Bly, 92, passed away Sunday evening (Aug. 15, 2010) at her home at 25 Third St.
Born in Hornell on May 28, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Daisy Flint Sutherby. On Aug. 11, 1940, she was married in Hornell to Richard I. “Dick” Bly, who predeceased her on Feb. 18, 2007 after 66 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her two sisters, Alice Sutherby of Hornell and Harriett Harte of California; her brother, Edward Sutherby of California and her son-in-law, Hartwig Hilmerson of California.
A life long resident of Hornell, Eleanor graduated from Hornell High School in 1935 and recently attended her 75th high school class reunion. She also received her bachelor’s of science degree from Geneseo State College.
Eleanor taught pediatrics at the former St. James School of Nursing before she became the director of nurses at Hornell Gardens. She was also employed with the Steuben County Public Health Nursing Service and volunteered for the Hornell Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.
An avid gardener, she enjoyed having a flower and vegetable garden at her home.
Her family includes her daughter, Nancy Hilmerson of California; her son, Mark Bly of Virginia; her four grandchildren, Kurt (Juliana) Hilmerson of California, Gray (Heidi) Hilmerson of California; Jennifer (Timothy) Davis and Melissa Bly Diplacido all of Virginia; her four great-grandchildren, Madison Diplacido of Virginia, Liv, Jude and Forest Hilmerson all of California; her brother, Herbert (Terry) Sutherby of Colorado; also her nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral and committal service will take place in her memory following calling hours at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Daniel Pickering officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at Fremont Cemetery, Stephens Mills.
