Edwin C. “Ed” Prouty
HORNELL-Edwin C. “Ed” Prouty, 58, of Upper Glen Avenue, passed away Friday afternoon (Dec. 15, 2017) at the Bath Veterans Administration Medical Center, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Born in North Hornell on Apr. 15, 1959, he was a son of James Prouty, Sr. who predeceased him in 2011 and Esther (Wheeler) Prouty, who survives. Besides his father, he was also predeceased by his sister, Louise Mader in 1990 and his two brothers, Douglas Prouty in 1962 and Terry Rice on Dec. 13, 2017.
A resident of Birdsall during his younger years, Ed was a graduate of Dansville Central School, and proudly served his country with the U.S. Army and attained the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge. He was a recipient of the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Parachutist Badge, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon.
Ed was self-employed as a truck driver and owned and operated Spiritual Traveler Transport in Hornell.
An avid football fan, he also loved to spend time with his family and friends and especially enjoyed helping others; his personal motto was “service to others.”
His loving family includes his wife, the former Dianne Cook, who he married at the Free Methodist Church in Hornell on Apr. 22, 2006; a daughter, Gina (Jana) Brockway of Hornell; his other daughter, Angela Smith; a granddaughter, Justine Korb; his mother, Esther Prouty of Dansville; his sister, Sherry Palmer; his two brothers, James, Jr. (Shana) Prouty of Florida and Frank (Patty) Prouty of Piffard; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Elmer Smith of Hornell; his two brothers-in-law, Thomas Cook and Edward Cook both of Jamestown; his sister-in-law, Pamela Rice of Birdsall; also his nieces and nephews; as well as his “fur babies”, Shadie and Jasmine.

Calling hours are 10:30 a.m.-noon Wednesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at noon Wednesday. A committal service, with military honors, will follow at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bath National Cemetery.
The United States flag and the Army flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home in recognition of Ed’s military service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, N.Y. 14843 or to the Wilmot Cancer Center, 111 Clara Barton St., Dansville, N.Y. 14437. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
