DOLORES S. ANDRUS

HORNELL-Dolores S. Andrus, 89, passed away early Friday morning (May 28, 20l0) at her home at 19 Elmwood Place, after a long illness.
Born in Hornell on Dec. 9, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Shirley and Frances Springstead Sherwood. On Nov. 27, 1945 she was married at St. Ann’s Rectory in Hornell to Robert L. “Bob” Andrus who predeceased her on Dec. 16, 1993, after 48 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her sister, Mary Jones.
A life long resident of Hornell, Dolores was a graduate of St. Ann’s School, Hornell High School, class of 1938 and St. James School of Nursing, class of 1943. She also attended St. John’s University in Brooklyn and completed post graduate studies in cancer at Memorial Hospital in New York City.
Dolores was employed as a staff nurse at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell and before her retirement in 1976 she was employed by the Steuben County Public Health Nursing Service for nearly 22 years.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a former member and past secretary of the Religious Education Board, a religious education teacher for 18 years, a past captain of the 40 week Club, a former member of the Parish Council and she also organized St. Ann’s Social Group for widows, widowers and singles. A member, Past Regent and District Deputy of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Ann No. 194, Dolores was also a member of the Past Regents Club of the Diocese of Rochester and served as a state representative for the Penn Yan, Corning and Hornell courts. She was a member and past president of the Ladies of Columbus as well as a member for more than 50 years of the Hornell Zonta Club. Her other memberships include St. Ann’s School Alumni Assoc., a former member of the Board of Directors of the Hornell High School Alumni Assoc., a member of the Class of 1938 of Hornell High School Alumni Scholarship Committee, a member of the St. James School of Nursing Alumni Assoc., St. James Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, and a member and past leader of TOPS, NY No. 807 and a former member of the Twin Hickory Golf Club. Dolores was also a past president of the Civil Service Retiree Local No. 907 which consists of Allegany, Steuben and Yates counties and was also an executive board member of retirees in Albany. A charter member, past president and chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell, she was also a life member of the National Ex-POWs National Organization.
Dolores served as an RSVP volunteer taking blood pressures in Hornell and Arkport and also volunteered at St. James Mercy Hospital’s hospitality desk as well as serving as a volunteer for the Hornell Chapter of the American Red Cross Blood Bank for more than 20 years. She was also active in the Office for the Aging in Steuben County having served as chairman of the Advisory Committee for three years. For many years Dolores was a volunteer at Hornell Gardens, MercyCare at McAuley Manor and for Faith in Action, where she served as a former member of the Board of Directors. She was a proud recent recipient of the Jefferson Award for Senior Citizens.
Her family includes her four daughters, Mary (John) Tindall of Radcliff, KY., Veronica “Ronnie” (John) McCaffrey of York, Barbara (Gerald) Mulhollen and Ellen Stewart (Joseph Day) all of Hornell; her son, Robert (Jody) Andrus of Canisteo; her 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her sister, Frances (Andrew) Sikso of Charlotte, NC; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from 3-7 p.m. Monday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where the Catholic Daughters and the Ladies of Columbus will conduct a joint memorial service at 7:15 p.m., followed by a memorial service by the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion at 7:30 p.m. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
