Daniel S. Kerr “Kerby”

HORNELL – Daniel S. Kerr passed away following a brief illness on Thursday (April 27, 2023), at his home in Hornell, NY. 

He was born on June 30, 1963, to Jack and Helen (Weaver) Kerr.  Dan graduated from Hornell High School, Class of 1981.  He then went on to receive his associate degree in criminal justice from Corning Community College.  Dan worked as a correctional officer for 26 years and retired as a Sergeant from the Livingston Correctional Facility in 2015 and was a member of the New York State Correctional Officer and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA).

During Dan’s retirement he cherished every moment he could with his family and friends.  He was an outdoor enthusiast and loved to hunt and fish.  Dan took pride in his vegetable garden and plants he kept up with around his house.  He also loved riding motorcycles and organized many rides with the Am Vet Riders.  Some of the best memories he made in his retirement were the road trips and motorcycle rides with his partner Deborah Stanford of Canisteo, NY.  Dan knew how to build or fix anything.  There were several times when he helped people fix things in their homes, on their vehicles, on a piece of equipment or whatever was needed, even if they were a stranger.  Even while on the road he would stop to help someone if he could lend a helping hand.

Dan was predeceased by his parents as well as two of his brothers: Jack Kerr and Tim Kerr.

Dan is survived by his four children: Daniel (Hannah) Kerr of Orlando, FL, Megan Kerr of Bonaire, GA, Jacqueline (Adam) Eason of Hornell, NY, and Emily (Tylor) Ormsby of Swansboro, NC.  He had five grandkids: Ella, Henry, Mackenzie, Adalynne, and Blake.  Dan is also survived by four brothers: Greg Kerr of Hornell, NY, Steve Kerr of Wellsville, NY, Dave Kerr of Bath, NY, Jim Kerr of Bath, NY, three sisters: Cindy Flanagan of Bath, NY, Beth Allaway of Bath, NY, and Susan (Mark Bell) Potter of Foley, AL, and a sister in-law: Fran Kerr of Bath, NY.  Dan was also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Nobody brought more joy to Dan’s life than his five grandkids.

At Dan’s request there will be no calling hours or funeral.  The family will hold a “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
