CATHERINE M. “KAY” GRIFFIN

FREMONT-Catherine M. “Kay” Griffin, 83, of Town Barn Road, passed away early Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17, 2010), with her loving family by her bedside, at the home of her daughter, Betty Haenisch of Arkport.
Born in Manhattan on Nov. 11, 1926, she was a daughter of the late James and Catherine Cullen DeVito.
Kay has resided in Fremont since about 1962 and had been employed by the former Big N, at the Ponce deLeon Restaurant as a waitress and also at
Wegmans in Hornell and retired from the Gunlocke Co. in Wayland. For 15 years she received much enjoyment from the students and teachers at Arkport Central School where she served as a foster grandparent with the Livingston County Foster Grandparent program.
She attended St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell and was also a past member of the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post Auxiliary.
Some of her favorite pastimes included embroidering, candle wicking, cooking, baking and traveling to North Carolina to spend time with some of her family. Kay’s favorite times were those she spent with her family, especially with her grandchildren.
Her family includes her five children, James Yezarski of New Bern, NC, Betty (Mark) Haenisch of Arkport, Albert Yezarski of Arkport, Linda (Jim) Harris of Mocksville, NC and John Yezarski of New Bern, NC; her 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; her sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Foley of Staten Island; also her nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Chico.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother, Michael DeVito and her two sisters, Josephine Latino and Margaret Sullivan.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830 or to the Dialysis Unit at Mercycare, 1 Bethesda Dr., Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
